Why Prayer & Fasting?

If you ever get to a place in your life where you feel like something is missing, it’s probably a connection problem: you are disconnected from God and too connected to the world. Prayer and fasting can have a powerful impact on setting your life back on track.

Prayer and Fasting connects us to God.

The more time you spend with something or someone, the more confidence you build in it. The same is true for God. The more time you spend with God, the more your faith in Him will grow. We are excited about the opportunities and the experiences that lay ahead of us as we pursue God together! We want you to experience God through prayer over these next a week.

Join the journey by following our Jennings, Eunice & Crowley Facebook Page for daily video encouragement. We encourage you to take some time each day to watch these videos, meditate on them, pray, share and find something that you can fast. You can also join us every Wednesday night at OSC Jennings & Eunice campus from 6:30pm-7:30pm for live prayer & worship.

WHY SHOULD I FAST?

Biblical fasting always has to do with eliminating distractions for a spiritual purpose; it hits the reset button of our soul and renews us from the inside out! It also enables us to celebrate the goodness and mercy of God and prepares our hearts for all of the good things God desires to bring into our lives. Remember, your personal fast should present a level of challenge, but it is very important to know your own body, your options, and, most importantly, to seek God in prayer and follow what the Holy Spirit leads you to do.

Scripture References

"But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you." Matthew 6:17-18 NIV

Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter–when you see the naked, to clothe him, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood? Isaiah 58:6-7 NIV

Types Of Fasts:

  • Complete Fast: Drink only liquids (consulting with a doctor is strongly encouraged before doing this type of fast).
  • Selective Fast: This type of fast involves removing certain elements from a diet. One example of a selective fast is the Daniel Fast, during which you remove meat, sweets, or bread from your diet and consume water and juice for fluids and fruits and vegetables for food.
  • Partial Fast: This fast is sometimes called the Jewish Fast and involves abstaining from eating any types of food in the morning and afternoon. This can either correlate to specific times of the day, such as 6:00 am to 3:00 pm, or from sunup to sundown.
  • Soul Fast: This fast is common for those who have health issues that prevent the fasting of food, or who wish to refocus certain areas of their life that are out of balance. This fast focuses on removing things that can contaminate our soul such as: social media, television, music, cell phone, etc...
